The Russian government has adopted a number of travel restrictions in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. Effective March 2020, Russia stopped issuing tourist visas. Travelers who already have valid tourist visas cannot use that visa to enter Russia.
Russia continues to issue private visas to direct relatives (i.e. spouses, children, and parents) of Russian citizens. Russia also issues special case private visas for US citizens traveling to Russia to take care of their ailing direct relatives or to attend the funeral of their direct relatives who have recently passed away. US citizens can also get a Russian visa if they are traveling to Russia for purpose of undergoing medical treatment themselves.
